Check the Registered Owner.  Below is an extract from an Adobe document that explains the procedures for transferring ownership of a copy of PageMaker (or any other Adobe product). Before you transfer ownership, you need to verify who the registered owner is. You can do this by phoning Adobe at 1-800-833-6687 from 6am to 5pm Pacific time. Just ask to speak to a customer service representative, then give them the serial number of the product (you can find it by clicking on "About" from the main pull-down menu). They can look up and tell you who the registered owner is. Don't buy a copy from anyone other than the registered owner (or verify that it's never been registered) if you're interested in getting Adobe to transfer ownership to you. If you're buying a copy from an ebay auction, you may or may not be able to check the serial number before you buy - it won't hurt to try, particularly if anything looks "too good to be true" about the copy being auctioned.

Transferring Ownership of an Adobe Product

Registering your Adobe software ensures that you are recognized as the legal owner and that you receive continued customer service and support. If you reside within the United States or Canada please complete and return a Transfer of Ownership form when you sell or give away Adobe software that is registered in your name.

Transfer of ownership applies to all versions of a product. For example, if you first bought Adobe PageMaker version 3.0, subsequently upgraded to version 6.5, and then decided to transfer ownership of version 6.5, you transfer ownership rights to all of your versions of PageMaker, up to and including version 6.5

To transfer ownership of an Adobe product:
1. Verify that your product is registered by calling Adobe at 800-833-6687. (In order to transfer ownership of your product it must be registered with Adobe Systems in your name.)
2. Complete the Adobe Transfer of Ownership form, providing all information requested for both the seller and the buyer. If you did not receive the Adobe Transfer of Ownership form, call Adobe FaxYI at 206-675-6137 and request document 499310.
3. Have both the seller and the buyer sign the Transfer of Ownership form.
4. Return the completed form to Adobe Systems Incorporated. Fax to 206-470-7138, or mail to:

NOTE: Until Adobe receives a completed Transfer of Ownership form, the product will be considered the property of the person or company who is registered with Adobe.

Not for Resale (NFR) copies of Adobe software are not transferable. NFR copies are provided or sold to Adobe partners (e.g., Authorized Resellers, Authorized Service Providers) for their use in selling products or processing jobs for Adobe customers. This software is not intended for the end-user customers and is not transferable.

NOTE: NFR copies usually have an "X" instead of an "R" in the serial number (e.g., PWW304X3100000-234).
